OUR DAIRY SUPPLIERS

Our little primer on cows:

Our cows are Holstein cows, also known as black and white. However, a few brown ones have also been mixed in. These are called Allgäu cows.

When a calf is born, it stays with its mother for a while, then it goes into a calf igloo. We call it our baby station. After about 6 to 8 weeks, they all come together into the large white calf igloo, so to speak, our kindergarten.

After another two months, they are allowed to go to the front of the barn. We call it "school." They are now called cattle, not calves. At 14 to 16 months, they are artificially inseminated. If this is successful
If they were allowed to go out to the cows in the exercise yard, they could go outside.
When exactly is a cow a cow?????????

A cow is only a cow once she has had a calf. Only then does a cow give milk and can she be milked.

Our cows wear collars with
a chip (the green thing on the collar) is attached. At the feeding station, each cow receives from the computer exactly the amount of concentrated feed she needs.

Our cows getThey get hay, concentrated feed, grass silage, and corn silage. In autumn they also get...
Sugar beet pulp.
Why does the pile of grass smell?
(Grass silage) so sour????????

The grass is mowed, raked together, brought in, and then with
Flattened by a tractor.

This compresses it so that the air in between can escape.

The lactic acid bacteria in the grass ensure that the silage is preserved. These natural bacteria then produce...
the naturally sour smell.
